Are you taking data security seriously enough? - January 2011
Marketing Week recently reported that following recent research by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) very few private sector companies had much knowledge of data security. Of the 401 sample only 14% were aware of all eight obligations and 41% knew of only one. With tighter legal obligations around data and the maximum fine rising to £500,000 in April of last year and the possibility of imprisonment for company directors, data security should be on your radar.
Marketing teams have a key role to play when it comes to improving your data security and with only 8 key steps it's not that hard to keep yourself out of jail...
- Keep it secure
- Process for limited purposes
- Keep no longer than required

- Ensure it is adequate, relevant and not excessive
- Process in line with individual rights
- Don't transfer to other countries without adequate protection
